Australia kept scoring runs at a good pace as they blocked out the good balls and punished the bad ones. Smith played well and got to a well deserved ton, his third in this Ashes series and it looks like no English bowlers would be able to pick up his wicket unless he himself commits a mistake. Tim Paine, the skipper is out with Steven Smith at the crease and they will be looking to post a commanding total on the board. The hosts started the day well as Head was dismissed early on by Stuart Broad. Smith then survived a scare too when he was dropped by Archer off his own bowling but since then, Smith has been as solid as a rock. Smith and Matthew Wade then steadied the ship with a 41-run stand before Wade threw his wicket away trying to attack Jack Leach.

75/2 in 25 overs this morning. Australia's or rather, Smith's session. He has stuck to the crease like a glue and ensured that there has not been a collapse.

Their 116-run stand put England on the back foot and at one stage, the run rate was touching 4, which prompted Root to bring on Leach to stall the run flow. Did not make too much of a difference as the run rate has not gone down too much.

UPDATE - 6.10 pm local (1710 GMT) - Really sad news. PLAY HAS BEEN CALLED OFF FOR THE DAY. A really poor sight, with the sun shining brightly but the damp outfield did not allow the groundstaff to prepare the ground in time.

Rain has coincided with Tea here and we hope that this one blows off quickly as well. No covers are on at this point of time, although the conditions are pretty bad. England will be aiming to dislodge Smith and then just run through the batting line-up. 46 overs left in the day, with around 100 minutes left. We might get only 25 realistically. Normally, start-stop sessions are not good for a batting side but the concentration from Smith and Labuschagne was outstanding. They were always at the bowlers, taking singles wherever possible and punishing the bad ball, which came, well, almost every over. Labuschagne is gone but as long as Smith is there, Australia will believe they can get any score.

Australia's session. Just a wicket lost and 72 runs scored in 18 overs. The start-stop rain has not made matters easy and England have struggled to grip the ball, spraying it to all the parts. Also, the heavy wind and cold conditions have been against them as well.

Labuschagne put his foot on the gas soon after and he too started scoring quickly. Smith took the back seat as he saw his partner oozing in confidence. They brought up their 50-run stand in just 70 balls and Marnus Labuschagne continued to score at a good rate even after. He is just one short of his half ton and will be looking to complete it and then go for the ton.

The hosts started the day in the best possible manner after being asked to field by Australia as Warner was dismissed in the first over itself by Stuart Broad. There was some resistance offered by Marcus Harris but he too perished against Broad who showed his class in the opening hour of the day. Jofra Archer looked a bit gentle today as compared to the previous matches and maybe he is saving his energy. Leach also bowled good but had no luck although one can clearly see there is some purchase on this surface for him.
